Rencontre avec Team Plastique: de la musique pour les yeux

Il y a quelques semaines, Les Lapins Techno ont pénétré dans l’antre de Team Plastique. L’occasion d’en savoir un peu plus sur le groupe le plus sexy de la scène berlinoise et de les découvrir backstage. Pourquoi quitte-t-on l’Australie, un pays sans hiver, pour Berlin ? Pourquoi de l’electroclash, pourquoi Team Plastique, pourquoi les costumes, pourquoi le fromage ? En arrivant dans l’appartement d’Axel pour leur poser toutes ces questions, nous les trouvons en pleine séance de travail, chacun devant son ordinateur, en train de boire… du thé.
Axel : Vous prendrez du vin ou du thé?

Axel : Donc nous représentons l’Angleterre et la France! Le vin et le thé!
LLT : C’est vrai que c’est très British le lait dans le thé!
Axel : Heu… en Australie aussi on met du lait dans notre thé…

Axel (avec un accent de Redneck Australien…) : C’est comme ça qu’on fait !

LLT: OK, et si on commençait cette interview ? D’où venez-vous ?
Kirsty : Nous venons de Brisbane en Australie.
Axel (toujours avec un accent de Redneck Australien…) : Brisbane Queensland ! Son Ananas géant, sa côte d’or, son chasseur de crocodile, et les gens qui parlent comme ça !
LLT : Il n’y a rien d’intéressant à Brisbane ?
Kirsty : C’est la troisième ville d’Australie, il y fait super beau et c’est une ville où l’on gagne très bien sa vie, mais on s’ennuie vite, c’est très conservateur. C’est le genre de ville où il faut organiser ses propres trucs sinon tu deviens taré. Tout le monde vit dans une maison avec un jardin, et les gens organisent de très grosses fêtes, genre 200 personnes, où tout le monde porte des costumes déjantés. Mais si tu vas là-bas sans connaître personne, tu n’en entendrais même pas parler…
LLT : Et vous avez commencé Team Plastique à Brisbane ?
Kirsty : Oui c’est là que je veux en venir avec ces fêtes… Ce qui s’est passé, c’est qu’on a fait une très grosse fête un soir. On portait des costumes de fous et comme on était un peu bourrés, on s’est dit « est-ce que vous pensez que si on était un groupe et qu’on portait ces costumes sur scène on pourrait faire beaucoup de concerts ? ». On s’est dit « Essayons ! » et c’est comme ça que Team Plastique a commencé. C’était une blague ! On a fondé le groupe et on a fait beaucoup de concerts…
LLT : C’était quand ?
Kirsty : Ça nous ramène en…
Axel : 2001, en avril.
LLT : Et quand êtes-vous venus à Berlin ?
Kirsty : En 2004. On a travaillé trois ans en Australie et après on est venu. On a senti qu’on devait quitter Brisbane. Beaucoup de gens quittent Brisbane pour Melbourne, LA ville culturelle d’Australie, mais on s’est dit « Jouons la « aventurier » et allons en Europe ». On pensait à Londres ou à Berlin… Mais comme on déteste Londres, on est venu ici. Nous avions des amis ici et j’avais appris l’Allemand avant. On était déjà venu deux fois et on avait bien accroché alors on est venu.
Cat : Un autre truc avec l’Australie c’est que les distances sont tellement grandes, ça coûte très cher de voyager d’une ville à l’autre. Ici, tu dépenses la même chose pour aller d’un pays à l’autre. En plus, les Européens payent bien mieux les groupes et les concerts.
Axel : C’est moins cher d’aller de Berlin à Londres ou de Berlin à Paris que d’aller de Brisbane à Sidney ou de Sidney à Melbourne parce que les villes australiennes sont à des milliers de kilomètres l’une de l’autre.
LLT : Quand vous êtes arrivés à Berlin la première fois, qu’y avez-vous découvert ? La scène musicale ? Les clubs ?
Kirsty : La première fois c’était en 1995, nous avions un ami Australien qui vivait ici… et on a senti une certaine connexion avec la ville. Cet ami c’était un ancien voisin d’Axel en fait… on a tous grandi dans le même quartier.
Axel : On est allé dans la même université, et Kirsty et moi, on était dans le même lycée et…
Kirsty :… et la même école !
Cat : Et Axel et mon frère sont allés dans le même lycée !
Kirsty : Et j’ai rencontré Axel quand j’avais 4 ans… Du coup on est un peu comme une famille.
LLT : Et quand vous avez déménagé à Berlin, c’était tous ensemble ?
Kirsty : Tous dans le même avion et dans le même appartement…
Cat : Ça nous pris du temps avant de se détester…
Axel : Oui, le truc c’est qu’on se voyait tout le temps.
Kirsty : Et c’est juste impossible d’être créatif quand tu passes tout ton temps avec quelqu’un avec qui tu travailles… c’est très dur !
LLT : Avant de venir à Berlin, vous avez joué en Australie pendant trois ans, quelle était la réaction des gens ?
Kirsty : Ils nous aimaient bien… Nous avons très bien marché en Australie, nous faisions de gros festivals. On se débrouillait bien… On aurait pu peut-être rester en Australie, peut-être qu’on s’en serait mieux sorti… Mais on voulait être des aventuriers.
Cat : Je pense que nous avions besoin de ce défi de venir en Europe, vivre des moments ridicules, ne pas être compris, pour être plus créatifs et pour être en dehors de nous-mêmes d’une certaine façon…
Kirsty : Je suis super contente qu’on l’ait fait !
Cat : Tu m’étonnes !
Kirsty : Je pense que l’Australie ressemble beaucoup aux Etats-Unis, c’est un système très capitaliste. Nous devenions plus vieux… En Australie, les gens se désintéressent de toi quand tu fais ce métier et que tu vieillis…
LLT : Quel âge aviez-vous en commençant Team Plastique ?
Kirsty : J’avais 26 ans
Cat : Moi 24
Axel : 29 ans
LLT : L’Australie a plutôt l’air d’être à la mode en matière de musique… On pense évidemment à Modular…
Kirsty : Il y a plein de bonnes choses en ce moment en Australie parce que c’est très isolé. Les gens n’ont pas le même accès à la culture… C’est comme nous, on s’est formé au moment de la vague Electroclash mais on ne savait pas ce que c’était.
Axel : Nous ne savions même pas qui était Chiks on Speed quand on a commencé.
Kirsty : On a commencé à faire ce truc et ensuite les gens nous disaient « Oh, vous faîtes de l’Electroclash, c’est le son de New York en ce moment ». Et c’est comme ça qu’on a eu du succès. Les gens disaient « Il y a ce groupe de Brisbane qui fait ce truc… ». On recevait des mails de clubs de New York qui voulaient nous booker, mais nous étions à Brisbane. Ce que je veux dire c’est que c’est parce que nous développions ce projet en Australie, que la musique que nous faisions était différente de l’Electroclash qui se faisait dans le reste du monde.
LLT : C’est donc ça votre musique, de l’Electroclash ?
Kirsty : Quand on a fondé ce groupe, on ne savait pas ce qu’on allait faire, mais on savait ce qu’on allait porter… Axel jouait de la musique depuis un moment.
Cat : Donc nous avons juste pris plein de synthétiseurs… Il y avait ces trois filles qui faisaient de la danse devant…
Kirsty : J’ajouterais juste que nous allions à beaucoup de soirée électro et nous trouvions que la scène manquait cruellement d’éléments visuels. Un DJ ou un mec derrière un ordinateur… il y avait des visuels mais c’était chiant.
Axel : Genre un carré lumineux qui vole dans l’espace…
Kirsty : Alors ce qu’on a voulu faire, c’est créer quelque chose d’artistique…
Axel : Lui donner un visage humain.
Kirsty: Nous ne chantions pas la première année… Mais croyez nous, on a fait bouger les gens !
LLT : Est-ce que vous avez des connections avec d’autres groupes de Berlin ?
Kirsty : Oui, bien sûr mais nous n’appartenons pas à une espèce de crew.
Cat : On n’aime pas trop ça…
LLT : Vous êtes amis avec Mark Boombastik ? Il a sorti un Maxi récemment…
Kirsty : Ouais, Putzen . « Putzen, putzen, putzen… » et sa mère lui a dit : « Mark tu ne devrais pas sortir une chanson qui parle de « Putzen » (nettoyer)… tu es trop crade ! »
LLT : Quand vous étiez en Australie, vous avez enregistré un album là-bas ?
Axel : Oui on a enregistré Suck… on en a vendu 500 copies en trois mois.
Kirsty : Suck ! Et le deuxième s’est appelé Tits : Suck Tits !

Axel : On n’a toujours pas de nom pour le troisième…
Kirsty : On a de nouvelles chansons, des trucs plus orientés dancefloor… Peut-être qu’on pourrait l’appeler More Tits ou Tits… and more… (elle s’arrête de parler)… Il faut qu’on arrête avec ça !
Cat : Oh oui !
Kirsty : Non mais vraiment (elle fait semblant de pleurer), je veux que mes performances soient plus clean…
Axel : J’entends ça à chaque fois…
Kirsty : Je sais !
Axel : Avant que tu montes sur scène…
Cat (imitant Kirsty) : « Je ne veux plus faire de choses autodestructrices! Bouhouhou»
Axel : Et juste après, elle est nue sur scène avec des boîtes de céréales à chaque pied…
Kirsty : Mais je ne peux pas m’en empêcher !
LLT : Donc vous travaillez sur votre prochain album ?
Axel : Nous travaillons sur quelques trucs, nous avons aussi un remix sur un label français et quelques chansons sur des compilations.
LLT : Vous parliez du côté dénudé de vos performances, est-ce c’est quelque chose que vous aviez préparé ? Au départ il s’agissait plus de porter des costumes que d’être nu ?
Kirsty : C’est juste qu’ils tombent très souvent ! Donc maintenant ça fait partie de la promo et de notre performance. Je me sens très bien nue, et j’aime ce sentiment de liberté.
Axel : Et tu te sens libre aussi quand tu pisses sur les gens quand tu es sur scène ?
LLT : Tu as fait ça ?
Kirsty : Oui, à Madrid…
Axel : Cat l’a fait à Londres… Team Plastique, levez votre main si vous n’avez jamais pissé sur quelqu’un ? (Axel ne lève pas la main)
LLT : Toi aussi ?
Axel : Oui à Copenhague, il y avait ce type qui était fan d’Australie…
Kirsty : C’était un informaticien !
LLT : On voulait vous demander les choses les plus étranges qui vous étaient arrivés en tournée, est-ce que c’était ces histoires de pisses ?
Axel: Il y a ces gens qui faisaient l’amour pendant notre concert… Où est-ce que c’était ?
Cat : A Bologne.
Kirsty : Je pense que c’est très étrange la façon dont les gens réagissent quand ils assistent à nos performances. Il y a cette personne normale avec un boulot qui devient juste tarée. C’est comme ce gars en Australie qui était avocat et qui disait : « Signez mon pénis, signez mon pénis, écrivez dessus ! »
LLT : Donc ça fait partie du truc, créer cette atmosphère sombre, folle et sexuelle ?
Kirsty : Bon, l’idée derrière notre groupe, c’est que les gens ne s’amusent pas assez… J’ai grandi dans une famille où les gens avaient des troubles mentaux et je me suis toujours demandé ce qui pouvait bien les faire devenir fous. Je pense que l’une des raisons, c’est que quand tu es enfant, tu as le droit de jouer, mais quand tu deviens adulte, tu n’as plus le droit. Les gens ne peuvent jouer que quand ils sont drogués ou bourrés, donc nous voulions créer des situations où les gens peuvent venir et s’amuser. C’est notre croyance profonde et c’est ce qui nous motive dans ce projet.
Axel : Et vous devriez dire aussi sur votre blog que nous voulons jouer en France. Nous n’avons jamais trop joué en France et nous aimerions jouer plus. (Axel s’adresse au micro) Si vous êtes en France et que vous n’avez pas assez d’argent pour nous payer, nous acceptons la bouffe française comme forme de payement ! On adore la bouffe française ! J’ai toujours des problèmes de poids parce que je ne sais pas dire non à la bouffe !
Kat: Et toutes les sortes de bouffes !
Axel: J’adore la bouffe, j’adore la bouffe française mais en général je ne peux pas me le permettre alors…
LLT : Et le fromage ?
Cat : Oh, j’étais à Paris, et le plateau de fromage ! Oh putain ! Du fromage de chèvre, du bleu…
LLT : On a vu que vous aviez une petite fixation sur le fromage, vous avez une chanson qui s’appelle Fromage à Trois et votre label s’appelle Fondue records…
Axel : J’ai juste trouvé ça marrant de faire un titre comme ménage à trois mais avec fromage, j’adore le fromage !
Cat : Il aime la fondue, le chocolat et le fromage !
Axel : Et j’adore ce jeu quand on mange de la fondue. Quand tu perds ton pain, il faut enlever tes vêtements…
LLT : Oui, mais ça dépend des règles avec lesquelles on joue !
Axel : Le fromage, c’est trop sexy !
LLT : Il y a des clubs que vous avez particulièrement appréciés quand vous êtes allés en France ?
Axel : Des clubs ? Non ! On a apprécié la bouffe ! Quand tu vas en France, tu n’y vas pas pour les clubs, tu y vas pour la bouffe ! Mais si vous connaissez un bon club qui a de la bonne bouffe, je suis preneur !
LLT : Pourquoi avoir choisi le nom Team Plastique ?
Kirsty : En Australie le sport, c’est dieu ! Et à l’école, les gosses qui sont bons en sport peuvent être les pires trous du cul, tout le monde les aime. Et en sport tu as plusieurs Teams : team A, team B, team C et team D. La team D, c’est l’équipe pour les gosses qui sont très mauvais en sport. Donc nous voulions créer une équipe pour tous les enfants d’Australie qui sont mauvais en sport. Et plastique pour Plastique Bertrand !
LLT : Whaow ! Plastique Bertrand !
Kirsty : Ouais, parce que j’ai vu le clip quand j’avais cinq ans et ça a changé ma vie. Mes parents, qui étaient très religieux, éteignaient la télé chaque fois qu’il passait parce qu’ils pensaient qu’il était satanique… Mais le message est resté dans ma tête : « I am the king of the divan, Ta plan pouh moy, bla bla bla ».
Axel: Kirsty est un très bon remixeur de chansons. Elle aime bien réinventer les paroles… On chantait cette chanson de Air, Sexy Boy, sur scène. Mais elle avait changé les paroles en…
Kirsty (elle chante) : “You belong with the stars, Satan shits and very nice cars”…
LLT : On a un pote qui invente des paroles culinaires sur les chansons en anglais comme « tu veux t’bâfrer une galette saucisse one more time » de Daft Punk ou « Do you believe in love cassoulet » de Cher.
Axel : Ça sonne comme des chansons de Team Plastique !
LLT : Revenons peut-être sur vos chansons à vous… Comment composez-vous vos chansons ?
Axel : Avant, je faisais tout avec mes synthés et ensuite on enregistrait les chansons. Mais pour le prochain album, on commence à la guitare…
Cat : Ça nous donne la structure, le genre de flow, la mélodie et les paroles… L’album TITS était écrit sous pression !
Kirsty : Idem pour SUCK !
Cat : Oui, pour les deux albums. Cette fois, nous avons du temps pour créer un sentiment pour chacune de nos chansons.
Kirsty : TITS était stressant parce que nous l’avons écrit juste après être arrivé ici, et ce n’était pas une période facile…
LLT : TITS sonne très sombre, en effet.
Kirsty : C’était dur, nous passions d’un endroit sans hivers à Berlin…
Axel : Quelqu’un veut de la pizza ?
Kirsty : Il n’y a pas de pauvres en Australie… Imaginez un pays comme le Danemark mais avec le soleil !
LLT : Vous avez changé votre façon de composer ?
Cat : Avant Axel faisait l’instrumental et nous étions supposées chanter…
Kirsty : Pour le prochain album, nous avons tout joué d’abord à la guitare, et c’est un processus beaucoup plus collaboratif.
Axel : Je pense que le prochain album va sonner un peu plus commercial, c’est beaucoup plus catchy !
LLT : Et quelles sont vos influences ?
Axel : Mon groupe préféré, c’est Duran Duran. J’adore Duran Duran, parce que c’est une expérience visuelle.
Kirsty : Je ne sais pas, j’aime plein de choses… J’adore Lady Tron. Je suis aussi très intéressé par les groupes qui ont des performances fortes comme Tracy + the plastics…
Axel : Ou Wanda Williams.
Kirsty : Tracy, cette fille est le groupe à elle toute seule. J’aime les groupes qui ont un concept et font plus que jouer.
Cat : Cocteau Twins, Kate Bush, Cindy Lauper, toutes ces nanas des années 80… J’aimerai bien voir comment nous jouerons quand nous serons plus vieux.
LLT : Qu’est-ce que vous aimez à Berlin ?
Axel : La pizzeria d’en bas !
Kirsty : J’aime la liberté de Berlin, j’aime prendre mon vélo et aller dans un club… je me sens en sécurité ici en tant que femme…
Axel : Et j’aime aussi le fait que quand il est 3 heures du matin, je peux toujours aller à la pizzeria!
Cat : Ce que j’aime à Berlin - ça peut aussi être très frustrant - c’est que tout le monde fait quelque chose… Ou du moins ils disent qu’ils vont faire quelque chose.
Kirsty : Tu as la liberté, et à la fin de la journée, tu ne peux t’en prendre qu’à toi-même si tu ne fais rien car tu n’as pas l’excuse du travail… Tu deviens vite ton principal obstacle !
LLT : Quels sont vos endroits préférés ?
Axel : The Pizza place!
Cat : Le Musée Pergamon, le Canal…
Kirsty : Sanssoucis, Eckbert sur le Maybachufer…
LLT : Vos Clubs/Bars préférés?
Axel : Chantal house of fame? Möbel Olfe? Rote rose ? Basso ? Bier Himmel ? Barbie Deinhoff’s ?
Cat : Je ne suis pas trop clubs. West Germany c’est pas mal…
Axel : Personne ne veut de la pizza?
LLT : Et comment voyez-vous votre futur à Berlin ? Vous voulez rester là pour toujours ?
Kirsty : Non, l’océan me manque, l’Australie me manque, mais peut-être que Berlin me manquerait si je partais…
Cat : Moi non plus je ne sais pas… Ma famille me manque, j’ai tous ces neveux en Australie que j’aimerais voir…
LLT : Quand retournez-vous en Australie ?
Axel : En Novembre pour une tournée de deux mois…
