Pourquoi avoir choisi le nom de Zadig ?
Parce que Zadig comme Zorro, comme Voltaire et comme Zidane… Plus sérieusement, on voulait un nom qui incarne le classicisme et l’humanisme, et qui sonne Arabe. Simplement. Crûment. On voulait un nom qui sonne « Multikulti » comme on dit ici, multiculturel, pour ressembler à la France d’aujourd’hui. Quand on va à Paris, c’est beaucoup plus coloré, métissé qu’à Berlin par exemple. On a naturellement pensé à Voltaire parce que c’est un personnage récurrent qui a une certaine cote ici. Il y avait donc dans ce nom une accroche évidente, qui s’est imposée à nous.
Etiez-vous déjà libraire avant de créer Zadig ou avez-vous suivi une formation de libraire ?
Ni l’un ni l’autre. J’avais beaucoup d’amis dans la filière du livre et j’étais surtout public de librairies, j’ai beaucoup acheté de livres. Avant, j’avais fait de la philo. Et une formation n’est pas obligatoire pour monter une entreprise. Par définition, il faut avoir une idée. Notre idée était de créer une librairie francophone et, au bout de quatre ans d’existence, on peut dire qu’on y est parvenu. On a respecté ce titre programmatique en faisant le choix de la diversité et des francophonies au pluriel : les francophones d’Europe, les francophones Nord-africains, Africains, Québécois… Ce qui m’intéressait et me passionne encore, ce sont les îlots francophones des pays de l’Est, en Roumanie, en Pologne… L’équation était là : Berlin est une ville qui réunit l’Est et l’Ouest et Berlin représente un Orient pour les Français. Cet aspect oriental s’incarne dans le logo de Zadig. Et la boucle est bouclée.
Et pourquoi avoir choisi Berlin?
Je n’ai pas choisi Berlin, c’est Berlin qui m’a choisi. Berlin est un coup de cœur. Je n’ai pas ciblé une ville en fonction de mes projets. Comme pour beaucoup de Français ici, c’est Berlin la base de mon inspiration et de ma motivation. On n’était pas sûr que ça prendrait au début mais au bout de quatre ans, avec les contraintes, les difficultés qu’on a eues et le peu de gain - parce qu’un libraire ne gagne jamais de sous - on est à même de dire qu’on a fait quelque chose. Pour ça, on doit rendre hommage à Berlin, qui incarne le modèle culturel parfait pour une librairie. Berlin a été une bonne base pour renouveler les genres, parce qu’ici on était inattendus. On n’est pas seulement un comptoir du livre français basique, on a aussi un côté artistique, künstlerisch, un peu avant-garde, qu’on a cultivé au début mais qui prend très bien ici.
Vous parliez de contraintes et de difficultés. Est-ce que, en tant que libraire français à l’étranger et compte tenu de la spécificité de votre clientèle, vous ressentez la crise du marché de livre ?
Les libraires ne sont pas touchés par la crise du marché du livre, ou du moins ce ne sont pas eux qui en souffrent le plus. Il est vrai qu’il y a des librairies qui ferment à cause des phénomènes de concentration, et que les libraires ne gagnent peut-être pas autant qu’ils pourraient attendre, mais la crise vient de la surproduction. Je pense que les gens lisent mieux mais qu’on les inonde beaucoup trop. La crise du livre vient des 600 ou 700 nouveaux livres publiés chaque année pour la rentrée littéraire. Moi je me place sur le front des libraires indépendants. C’est un concept très français. Il s’agit de défendre la qualité et de savoir éponger la surproduction de certains éditeurs.
Justement, comment et sur quels critères opérez-vous cette sélection pour « éponger la surproduction » ?
Dans le métier de librairie, on parle de fonds, un peu comme un fond de sauce j’allais dire… Puis on fait monter en « gamme », à partir de ses intuitions de départ. On a aussi suivi certains clients à la trace sur leurs goûts, comme le ferait une librairie de quartier. Dès le départ, on a adopté cette démarche pragmatique et méthodique du commerce de proximité. Sauf que notre zone, c’est Berlin. Et je pense qu’on a collé assez facilement au goût d’ici.
Quand je parle de difficultés, c’est surtout la logistique : les facilités de paiement des éditeurs, le besoin de fluidifier le commerce du livre, de raccourcir les délais de livraison… Dès le début, on a voulu envoyer des signes aux clients, en établissant une grille de prix, en garantissant des délais, et on continue à se battre pour ça : des livres qui mettent quinze jours pour arriver de Paris, c’est inadmissible. C’est mon plus gros boulot de lobbyiste en France et dans l’Association Internationale des Libraires Francophones (AILF). Donc tout n’est pas satisfaisant, c’est clair, mais je pense qu’on est quand même parvenu à apporter un souffle d’air frais, à dépoussiérer le métier.
Vous aviez pensé à la librairie française des Galeries Lafayette avant de créer Zadig ?
Disons que j’ai compté sereinement avec. J’avais même compté avec la Romanische Buchhandlung près de la Savignyplatz, qui était un commerce de qualité mais qui était déjà en difficulté à l’époque. Je ne suis pas un fin stratège, j’ai fait ça avec le cœur, les tripes et l’opinion aussi. Je voulais tenter ma chance et j’ai compté avec ces deux concurrents là. Mais en même temps la conjoncture est bonne, on a fait notre place.
Entretenez-vous des liens particuliers avec les « institutions » Françaises de Berlin : Ambassade, Institut Français, Gazette de Berlin…
Oui, absolument. Je connais très bien le fondateur de la Gazette de Berlin, journal qu’on a vu naître. Dans le réseau institutionnel, on a de très bons rapports avec le Bureau du livre de l’Ambassade, avec l’Institut Français et la fondation Genshagen, une fondation franco-allemande datant de la chute du mur et qui a des programmes littéraires. Je n’ai pas de préjugés, je suis ouvert au développement de partenariats avec tous ceux qui travaillent sur la promotion des auteurs, des éditeurs. On a aussi tissé des liens avec des autorités francophones mais non françaises, la Belgique par exemple.
Pensez-vous avoir un rôle de conseil plus fort encore qu’un libraire classique, du fait de la spécificité de votre clientèle, qui souhaite sans doute maintenir un lien affectif et intellectuel fort avec son pays et être au courant de son actualité ?
Non je ne crois pas. Les Français ici sont très bien renseignés. La clientèle française a changé : elle est plus jeune, a moins de pouvoir d’achat, mais elle fait la navette entre Paris et Berlin grâce aux compagnies low cost et elle est très instruite et renseignée sur ce qui se passe en France. Les meilleurs acheteurs lisent au moins Le Monde des Livres, ce qui est déjà beaucoup. C’est le niveau culturel de Berlin qui est intéressant, et notre clientèle allemande est elle aussi très informée. D’après un comptage rigoureux que nous avons fait deux étés de suite, notre clientèle se compose à 50-50 de Français (ou francophones), et d’Allemands.
Ce que je cherche à faire, c’est avant tout trier, inventorier, tenter de guider les clients hors des sentiers battus et des idées reçues. Bien sûr, je garde un ton bien à moi, j’ai mes basiques et mes fondamentaux, on aime ou on n’aime pas…
Par exemple ?
Il y a plusieurs thèmes que j’affectionne, comme le paysagisme, l’architecture ou la jeune fiction francophone, mais je n’ai pas de credo unique auquel on pourrait me réduire. J’ai interrogé ma clientèle et j’ai parfois levé le pied sur certaines choses. On a moins aujourd’hui cette image élitiste ou tournée vers les jeunes auteurs branchés du moment. Ça nous a permis de lancer notre fonds et d’incarner une certaine nouveauté, mais on a très vite agrégé des classiques universels comme Boulgakov ou Faulkner…. On ne peut pas créer la librairie idéale dès le début, à moins d’être un gros investisseur avec des idées préconçues mais ça n’était pas ma démarche. Pour définir notre ton, on pourrait parler de subculture. Le terme « Underground », est tellement réducteur et galvaudé, surtout à Berlin et dans un quartier artistique comme celui-ci. Le mot élitiste me plaît encore moins. On peut dire exigeant et avant-garde. Dans ce domaine, le fonds qui plaît particulièrement à la clientèle allemande est tout ce qui touche à Marcel Duchamp, le dadaïsme, Guy Debord, le situationnisme… Le rayon de la pensée critique et des maîtres à penser du XXe siècle, à partir de Sartre et Camus, est très important chez nous et intéresse beaucoup la clientèle allemande. Voici quelques pistes pour résumer notre ton et notre action.
De quelles manières assurez-vous l’animation de votre librairie en tant que lieu culturel ?
On établit une programmation par semestre et selon l’actualité. J’ai toujours quatre ou cinq lectures en tête. J’ai maintenant pas mal de contact avec des auteurs qui vivent et travaillent ici, et il y en a de plus en plus. Je suis de plus en plus sollicité par des gens qui veulent faire des choses à Berlin, parce qu’ils y vivent ou parce qu’ils sont de passage. Je savais que dès que notre librairie connaîtrait un certain développement, cet aspect suivrait naturellement. Maintenant il faut trier, sélectionner. Par exemple, pendant la biennale d’art contemporain, on organise une exposition, chose que l’on n’a pas faite depuis deux ans. Il s’agit d’une exposition de l’artiste Corinne Laroche qui dans sa pratique du dessin sort des cadres convenus – elle se fait éditeur de cartes postales pour cet événement ! Je ne cherche pas à être animateur ou agitateur culturel, je n’ai pas envie d’être autre chose qu’un libraire. Je ne veux pas m’éparpiller et faire de l’événementiel pour l’événementiel et je n’ai pas envie de sortir de mon terrain d’action, qui est le livre, l’écrit. On m’a parfois sollicité pour mettre des choses sur les murs, j’ai souvent dit non. Mais cette fois, nous clôturerons l’exposition par une présentation de livres d’artistes, amis de l’artiste invitée ou bien auteurs de fascicules et ouvrages déjà présents dans la librairie. In fine, on retombe sur nos pattes.
Voudriez-vous nous faire partager votre dernier coup de cœur littéraire ?
Je m’intéresse de plus en plus aux auteurs du dadaïsme berlinois comme Raoul Hausmann et Richard Huelsenbeck, dont l’Almanach Dada a été réédité et publié aux Presses du Réel. Je m’intéresse beaucoup en ce moment aux années 20 à Berlin. Hélas, il y a très peu de traduction des auteurs de l’époque de la République de Weimar et je pense que nos chers éditeurs français feraient bien de revoir leurs domaines de traduction de la littérature allemande. C’est une époque passionnante sur laquelle il y a un manque, comme une impasse. On y vient peu à peu : Berlin Alexanderplatz de Döblin vient d’être retraduit chez Gallimard, Seul dans Berlin de Hans Fallada a crée un très fort engouement, aussi bien à Paris qu’à Berlin. Kurt Tucholsky par exemple, dont il n’y a plus aucun titre disponible à ce jour, n’est réédité qu’en cette fin d’année 2008 par l’excellent éditeur français Circé.
Cette époque me passionne car je pense que les années 20 avaient beaucoup de similitudes avec la nôtre. J’aime l’idée qu’une ville a des fondamentaux, une mémoire, une pérennité, et je crois que Berlin, tellement en vogue aujourd’hui, a toujours eu certaines de ces caractéristiques. La créativité de cette époque est méconnue parce que la tragédie nazie totalitaire, la double culpabilité allemande, le marasme qu’a vécu Berlin avec sa coupure en deux, ont occulté la vigueur de la scène artistique des années 20. Il y avait une vie la nuit, les cabarets, la danse, les théâtres… Le dadaïsme berlinois est très peu connu alors qu’il était extraordinairement avant-gardiste, de même qu’aujourd’hui beaucoup de choses tombent dans l’oubli, mais l’avant-garde c’est ça aussi. A mon humble avis, ce foisonnement et cette créativité étaient déjà là à l’époque.
J’aurai toujours un œil attentif sur la promotion des auteurs locaux, pour faire mon boulot d’acteur culturel français berlinois. C’est important de savoir pourquoi on est là. Berlin est une ville passionnante, il souffle ici un petit vent de folie et il y a un culte de l’avant-garde pour l’avant-garde, et tout ça a des sources.
